463L Pallets

463l-palletsThe 463L pallet is the centerpiece of the Materials Handling Support System 463L, designed in the late 1950’s to provide more efficient intermodal cargo transfer for the United States Air Force. Today the 463L Master Pallet (also known as the HCU-6/E pallet) is a common size platform for bundling and moving air cargo, and serves as the primary air cargo pallet for the USAF, other air forces, and many civilian cargo transport aircraft worldwide.

The Materials Handling Support System 463L was specifically designed for palletizing and transporting air cargo on roller-type conveyors in terminals, restraint rails and roller conveyors in aircraft, and on cargo loading and unloading systems on ground vehicles. The 463L pallet system is equipped for locking pallets into cargo aircraft rail systems, and includes tie-down rings to secure nets and cargo loads.

The 463L Materials Handling Support System includes 463 L pallets made of corrosion-resistant aluminum. A single 463 L pallet is 88” long by 108” wide and is 2 ” thick. An empty 463 L pallet weighs 290 pounds (355 pounds with a complete set of nets) and has a maximum load capacity of 10,000 pounds. The maximum pounds per square inch load that can be placed upon a 463 L pallet is 250 pounds. The usable dimensions of the upper surface of a 463 L pallet are 84” wide by 104” long, allowing a 2” periphery around the pallet to attach straps, nets, or other restraint devices.

The handling system for 463 L pallets consists of several rows of metal rollers that allow the palletized cargo to easily roll into the aircraft. Many of these rollers are stowable to change the cargo deck to a flat, clear loading surface for wheeled cargo. The side rails guide the 463 L pallets into the aircraft and provide lateral and vertical restraint up to 8 Gs. These rails are equipped with detent locks that hold the pallet securely in place once inside the aircraft. These locks also restrain the forward and aft movement of pallets during air flight.
